I used to hate running
And for most us, our experience of running is so bad
Most of us hate it and we’ve always suffered on a run
That’s what we’ve been taught and now it’s engrained
We’re taught to go as fast as we can, to get to the finish line, to obsess over outcome and at school it was a form of punishment
And now as adults we say things like …
“I’m not a runner”
”I can’t run”
”I could never run a marathon”
—
most of the time, that statement of ‘I can’t run’ or “I’m not a runner” isn’t physical, it’s mental
it’s a belief
a judgement
it’s not the truth
and for those that do run, most of us have a ‘ceiling’ or negative thought we choose to hold onto
if you run
you might have the belief you’re not very good at running
if you run far
you might always feel that you’re not running ‘far enough’
if you run fast
you might only ever see how much faster everyone else is
most of us either:
1) don’t feel we belong or believe we are ‘a runner’ or
2) don’t feel free on a run, we carry judgement and negative thought with us on every run instead
—
often what you’ll find is that if you have that view or approach to running or to exercise ..
it’s often your approach towards life
that was certainly true for me
